Day of Learning at SEEing Green 2: Moving Beyond Green

This past weekend, the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles hosted AIGA Los Angeles’ SEEing Green 2: Moving Beyond Green. A great group of about 150 attendees gathered to explore strategies for approaching sustainability. Moderated by Eduardo Braniff, the Global Insights Director at Imagination, the program included the recast of three segments from Compostmodern ’09, followed by presentations by Duke Stump, Aaris Sherin, and our very own Kevin O’Donnell. Kevin naturally did a great job! He presented his ecologic protocol matrix, and took the audience through all three stages (green, greener, greenest) within the Planet column. The Q+A panel at the end of the day with all three speakers brought to light the enthusiasm that exists for sustainable design and the ever-present concern, especially during these difficult economic times, that a green business is not necessarily a financially viable business. The most succinct answer to that concern was that money, like water, forests, and minerals, is a resource. It has to be factored into everything that a business does in the pursuit of environmental sustainability. Many green businesses will fail, but we should not focus on those failures as evidence that green businesses in general are not financially viable. After all, the failure rate for businesses in general is enormous, but that does not stop entrepreneurs from pursuing their dreams. So it must be for the green movement. Overall, this was a very informative event, and we highly recommend it for next year. Great thanks to Bonnie Powers and her team, all volunteers, for bringing this conference to fruition.
