GoSolar Mar Vista Launch Event

gosolar.001For the second time this week, I was in Mar Vista (a neighborhood in the Los Angeles metro area near Venice) to attend a community event focusing on environmental issues. Earlier in the week I presented at the Wise Water Use Expo, and last night I presented at the GoSolar Mar Vista Launch Party and Neighborhood Mixer. This community really seems to know what they want and are working hard to help their neighbors share information and knowledge through a group called Open Mar Vista. With a turnout between 85 and 100, the event was surprisingly well attended for a Saturday evening.

The evening was launched with brief words by Los Angeles Councilman Bill Rosendahl. I followed with fifteen minutes of slides outlining the Repower America initiative to achieve 100% clean energy by 2018. Repower America is one of three campaigns run by Al Gore’s non profit organization The Alliance for Climate Protection. You may be more familiar with the other two Alliance programs – We Can Solve It (a string of TV commercials with political rivals sitting together and talking about the importance of climate change policy), and This Is Reality (a number of tongue in cheek TV commercials showing the fallacy of clean coal technology). The event was closed with two representatives of SolarCity who talked at great length and detail about their company and solar lease program. From their web site “SolarCity is the nation’s leading full-service solar provider for homeowners, businesses and government organizations – the first company to provide solar power system design, financing, installation and monitoring services from a since source.” I plan to do more research about this company and we’ll report about it here. But until then I’ll say that we were very impressed by their presentation.

Event organizers John Ayers and James Brennan put together a great evening. This week I find myself envying Mar Vista residents for having strong community leaders striving to make a meaningful difference. I look forward to hearing about their next event.
