Wise Water Use Expo

wise water expo

Earlier this week I participated in an event called the Wise Water Use Expo. It was held in Mar Vista, California (part of the LA metro area) and hosted by Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl and his District 11 Empowerment Congress Environmental Committee. Attendance was well above anticipated resulting in standing room only. The event had two components – table presentations of water conservation related products and services, and three fifteen minute presentations focusing on different aspects of the issue.

I kicked off the speaker portion by identifying key aspects of the water crisis facing California and the Los Angeles region. Pamela Berster of Green Gardens Group LA (G3LA) followed by showing the audience vegetation appropriate for L.A.’s Mediterranean climate – what she called ocean friendly landscapes. Ed Begley, Jr. was the final presenter and spoke about his personal water conservation experiences. Raffles for amazing products and services were raffled off in between. The evening closed with the three speakers, joined by Director of Water Resources for the LA DWP Thomas Erb, answering audience questions with a panel discussion.

The expo was a mix of energetic community interest, critical information, and personal involvement that suggests growing commitment to the issue of water use. It would be great if the expo organizers were able to take the show on the road and hit every neighborhood in Los Angeles. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that real change in water use behavior is on its way. Organizers Joseph Treves and Sherri Akers are to be commended for getting the word out and producing a very entertaining and educational event. I had a great time, enjoyed giving a presentation to a very eager audience, and met some great people doing good work.

Below is a video version of the presentation. Contact us if you would like a larger or higher resolution version.

  • We have a product for commercial buildings that use cooling towers for heat rejection from HVAC systems. These systems typically consume tremendous amounts of water simply to evaporate it and remove heat. Some systems in large data centers can utilize 40,000 gallons a day and there are still larger consumers out there. As well, these users toxify the water by adding chemicals to have the water behave in certain ways to help the process and prevent fouling. Since the water is so hard in LA, the water needs to be drained “blowdown” after it cycles up to about 2 or 3 with traditional chemical. Our system allows the cycles of concentration of dissolved minerals to go well beyond traditional limits and increase cycles to 6 or greater. The higher the cycles the less you need to blowdown and make-up for the lost evaporation and draining. When speaking about large systems, we are talking about millions of gallons that can be saved for vital purposes.
Our system does this with the atmosphere and UV light. It is a simple inexpensive method to save water and keep the water behaving as necessary. Best of all, it returns to water and oxygen as it breaks down without any chemical toxification.
We can save millions of gallons of water if adopted in Los Angeles.
    Thanks,

  • Hi Mark,
I’m not familiar with your system. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. Most of my design work is with commercial building clients – primarily retailers. I’ll definitely check it out. Maybe it’s something I can write a post about. If I have questions about it, could I contact you directly? If so, can you click the email me button on the site and send me a direct message?
Thanks for commenting on and checking out the blog.
